Guiry was born in 1949 in Youghal, Ireland. He was a teacher and tutor at several different institutes in Europe and Canada. In 1991, Guiry was elected as a member of the Royal Irish Academy. He was on the council from 1994 to 1996, and from 1995 to 1997, Guiry was the vice-president of the academy. From 1989 to 1993, Guiry became editor-in-chief of Phycologia, a journal of the International Phycological Society. He later became president of the society and the British Phycological Society.
